How I never made money from the internet

Google adwords, adsense and analytics

What you should do...

All these schemes are very easy to join but they do have very strict terms and conditions. I broke them and spent weeks trying to get re-accepted back onto the schemes. To join adsense you need to have a website. This is actually the easy part. See my article about website design. Adsense will analyse your site and put targeted ads on it then pay you when people click on them. They do actually pay quite well but the problem is driving traffic to your site and then getting people to actually cick on the ads. At the time of writing I have so far made NIL!

With adwords once you have created an account you then create ads which pop up in google searches when people search for your keywords. You set a daily budget and pay a small amount evry time someone clicks on your ad whether they buy something from you or not. I set a daily budget of £1.00 and so far this has COST me £30.00 a month! Have I sold anything? Not a jot!

What I did wrong...

I created a landing page full of affiliate ads. Google likes sites which offers a lot of information therefore setting up a site about which you have a great deal of knowledge is helpful so that you can fill it with pages of advice and even images.

I managed to get my site completely barred which means that Google thoroughly examine your site before re-accepting it. This meant I had to spend a great deal of time adding things such as a privacy policy etc., (I had a newsletter form collecting email adresses).

Google analytics

Despite my other experiences this is something I would thoroughly recommend. All you need is to be able to add a piece of code into the head of your web page and Google analytics will return information on the amount of visitors your site is attracting along with more information about those visits. Of particular interest is the 'bounce rate'. This is the amount of people who arrive at your landing page and then leave again without visiting any more of your site. If you have a high bounce rate - say eighty to ninety percent Then you need to consider what more you need to do to keep customers on your site. Create a catchy title, invite people to explore your site, etc.
